Good Nights Sleep

Somehow I seemed to have recovered after 8 hours sleep. Alas, I have to get in early tomorrow so another short sleep night tonight...

Movers came and the fixtures are all gone, the kiosk deserted. Ironically, no one has started demolition or, that I can see, even been in the place they had to have us out of two days ago. End result: the same. Difference: Instead of the crew I scheduled to come in today to breakdown the kiosk, I had to do the lion's share with little help, and throw our store into unnecessary chaos. We'll probably never know what this was really all about or who screwed up (Borders? Westfield?), let alone will anyone be held accountable.

Ironically we got a FedEx delivery of some more calendars for the kiosk today... (Don't worry, we'll find a good home for them!).

We have several people who want extended time off this month. 10 days or more. Trouble is no one has earned any vacation time yet. As policy we are terminating them (or suggesting they resign), including those who took the holidays off. Several are shocked that they'll loose their job just for taking a couple weeks off, even though they started three months ago... With the cut back in hours we'll probably loose several others, too, whose availability does not meet the needs of the store. I have several staff whose availability is their schedule. In other words their availability is exactly a full time shift and no more.

One of the managers asked me how did this happen. It's because we were in a rush to hire people and didn't check availability thoroughly enough at the start. Then we didn't hold them accountable to it or even their attendance (we STILL haven't started tracking attendance including no-call no-shows!) I have one staff member who has changed his availability nine times in 3 months. We've all be so overwhelmed with everything else, but it's back to basics time.

Long day today working on the schedule for next week which is late (because I've been busy elsewhere...). On a whim I went to Denny's for dinner. Kinda pricey for average food. Can't remember the last time I went out to eat. House of Tamales? I even had a salad. 23.17 including a generous $4 tip. I needed a good meal, though, and it did me a lot of good to sit down for an hour and read and eat. Surprisingly I didn't even eat that much. I'm a Clean Plate club member, but I didn't even finish the chicken. Don't remember ever walking away from meat! Still, I'm in a rare mood.

Well, I've got to get up in four hours so I better sign off.
