Team Building

South of Market in an un-air conditioned building. Met the new
supervisors briefly and got down to work. We interviewed applicants
all day today in a stuffy, hot room, sweat dripping down everyone's
face.

I can't get into details about who we interviewed. Some were home
runs, some were maybes, and some were "pass." We paired up with the
supervisors which was a good way for us to get to know each other,
for them to hear our vision of the store via what we said to our
applicants. We've got a great team!

But I felt sad with some of the people we interviewed. I don't see
how they survive, so marginal some of their skills. There is a very
strong part of me that wants to help, but, no way can I put them in
the store.

My favorite part of the interview is when I tell them about the new
store. I am genuinely excited and have no shame expressing that
excitement. In fact, I ask questions early in the interview to see if
they can show some excitement, some passion, especially for books...
It's a win win win situation, then, to tell them about our beautiful
new store. They get excited, the supervisor I'm team interviewing
with gets excited, and the applicant gets excited.

There were some late stragglers and a couple of us ended up staying
late to interview EVERYBODY. It turned out to be a long wait for the
MUNI, too, and I came home and crashed, having lost my voice today,
as well.
