Since no one called me I can hope to assume that last nights planned
power outage went well.
I called the burglar alarm company, and bought ice to pack the
fridges and freezers (we have a few). I was carting out a dolly
stacked with bags of ice from Walgreens when it hit me that we have
our own huge ice machine full of ice. Doh! None of us had thought of
that as an option. So I left instructions to pack 'em all with ice.
Hope that worked.
Also gave our tech support people a heads up that we would need help
shutting down our servers and booting them back up in the morning.
Again, no phone call is probably a good thing. I hesitate to call
since everyone is usually busy enough (I know I am).
Meanwhile, staff is holding up very well. No one has bailed. We'll
have to see how they handle the cut in hour next week (and the
blackout days around the holidays).
Had a nice conversation with one of our student/sellers yesterday
about drawing (she's and art student) and animation. About flow and
the thrill of bringing art to life when you animate it. About right-
brain tricks to learn to draw (instead of drawing circles for heads
and eyes, to see the negative space around the object); about
learning to SEE differently. Drawing on the Right Side of Your Brain
(Edwards), has many tricks for getting out of our habits of drawing
(representational), and for seeing differently. Such as drawing
upside down, or outlining (negative space). Good stuff.
There is also a book like that for writing, but it isn't as effective
(for me at least). Having that board of critics in my head (and
rehearsing my Pulitzer Prize / Academy Award acceptance speech) is an
ongoing issue for me.
But it's nice to think about something other than the business of
work, and feel a tinge of excitement and insight.
